Intelligent infusion connects patients and nurses
Date:2020/05/17

Nursing is an integral part of the whole medical and health work. The quality of nursing work is directly related to the patients’ medical safety, treatment effect and physical rehabilitation. In this regard, how to complete nursing tasks with high quality has become the focus of the nursing work in hospital.

Recently, the second batch of "Innovative Medical Service Brands" in Shanghai has been freshly released. The brands selected this time lay more stress on people’s needs of seeking medical advice under the new medical reform and on the innovations in technology, ideas and models. In this selection, the Nursing Department of Ruijin Hospital Luwan Branch affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine applied the Lachesis Close-Loop Infusion Management System (CIMS) and was selected as the second batch of "Innovative Medical Service Brands" with the project of "Intelligent infusion system connects patients and nurses”.

In early 2019, Ruijin Hospital Luwan Branch promoted and applied the Lachesis CIMS in the infusion rooms of wards, Outpatient and Emergency of the whole hospital. The system facilitates the hospital to expand HIS to inpatient infusion management and exchange data, so as to free patients and their caregivers from "manual observation of infusion", help nurses monitor the whole process of infusion and timely deal with abnormalities, and upgrade the overall level of nursing services and innovation.

According to the Nursing Department of Ruijin Hospital Luwan Branch, the Lachesis full-closed infusion management system has received a positive public evaluation since its application. After the system is applied, the most intuitive feelings of patients and their families are less ringing bells in the wards, regularized pace of the nurse's frequent movement, more peaceful rest time for infusion patients, and less mental pressure on accompanying family members. For the medical care team, the system has brought about higher working efficiency, longer clinical service time, and safer infusion process for patients.

The CIMS consists of an intelligent infusion monitor, Nurse Digital Assistant (NDA), blue bridge and system software, and helps the hospital monitor the whole process and trace information, including issuing doctor's instructions, verifying the prescription, implementing the verification, and monitoring infusion. The system can promptly remind the reception of infusion bottle, withdrawal of needles and abnormal conditions of infusion according to the drip rate and remaining volume of patients’ infusion, facilitate nurses to arrange work scientifically and reasonably, provide services initiatively, and effectively improve the efficiency of nursing work and the quality of nursing services.

Step-by-step check. No risks for patients

The CIMS is connected to the doctor's advice in real time. After a doctor gives instructions, a nurse checks the information on patients and drugs through NDA to ensure that it is accurately matched with the doctor's order. When performing infusion, the nurse scans the barcode on the patient's wristband and infusion bottle at bedside and confirms that the infusion is performed correctly. If the information is not matched correctly, NDA will issue an alarm to effectively avoid the occurrence of infusion errors.

Real-time monitoring makes nurses worry-free

Infusion monitoring is the core application of the entire CIMS. The ultra-fine gravity sensor on the infusion monitor transmits the patients’ infusion status to each terminal of the hospital through the blue bridge. Nurses can use the NDA and LED screen at the nurse station to monitor the progress and abnormal conditions of patients’ infusion in real time, thus achieving accurate measurement and remote monitoring. In addition, the system's intelligent reminder function can ensure that nurses can control the infusion situation in any work scenario, and no longer need to worry about the incorrect execution of doctor’s instructions, inspection errors and omissions, and other situations.

Intelligent inspections, and automatic generation of records

Intelligent inspections exert an obvious effect on reducing the workload of nurses. During the infusion inspection, after a nurse scans the patient's wristband and barcodes of infusion drugs, the system can automatically record the person and time of the inspection, meanwhile generate the inspection form, and upload it to the hospital system with one click, thereby facilitating the hospital to get rid of the tedious procedures of handwriting record.

Data accumulation for reference of clinical medication

The analysis on infusion big data is a characteristic application of the CIMS. The big data accumulated by the system can be analyzed from the perspectives of infusion, patients, drug usage and early warning data, etc., providing a better reference for the rational use of clinical drugs.

In recent years, new generation information technologies, such as cloud computing, Internet of Things, big data and artificial intelligence, are accelerating the integration with medical scenarios. The informatization development of medical care is an irreversible future trend. Guided by the national policy of advocating the construction of smart hospitals, Lachesis is the first in the industry to propose to build a smart hospital starting from smart wards. The CIMS is an important clinical application of proactive risk discovery that overturns the traditional infusion model and realizes intelligent management of the entire infusion process, thus becoming an indispensable part of the overall solution of smart wards.

Lachesis Smart Wards focus on patients’ safety and build two major platforms for the hospital: Smart Ward Interactive Platform and Internet of Things Platform. They provide medical workers with four major clinical applications (intelligent nursing business, proactive discovery of patients' risks, drug management in the inpatient area, and intelligent medical business) under three scenarios (nurse stations in the inpatient area, corridors and wards). Ultimately, they can realize the interconnectivity of medical and patient data in the inpatient area, transform afterwards treatment into beforehand active discovery, interim effective supervision and afterwards improvement and feedback, and accordingly improve the quality, safety and efficiency of medical care.
